Confined space concrete sampling, diving, stop log installation, all in a days work….

EDS were appointed by BAM Nuttall to provide  a range of multidisciplinary services in support of a joint project with BAM the Principal Contractor (PC) and engineering consultants, CH2M, for a tidal Environment Agency sluice structure. EDS provided diving services, confined space entry, rescue services with equipment and intrusive structural investigation work.

EDS assisted the Principal Contractor by developing a safe methodology for undertaking each stage of the work.  This involved consideration of the numerous hazards to be addressed including mechanical and electrical sluices and penstocks, crane lifts for stop logs and personnel, tidal and fluvial conditions and restricted space on site.

Works began with diving operations to install the stop logs, in co-ordination with the crane supplier, King Lifting. Subsequently, EDS provided confined space entry and rescue support to CH2M engineers to undertake a visual inspection. We then undertook intrusive investigations (concrete core sample and concrete dust sampling) and arranged for subsequent analysis by our nominated specialist laboratory, Sandberg LLP, including compressive strength, petrography and chloride testing.

Drawing on our diverse and multi-skilled workforce, we were able to supply a single consistent team of personnel to undertake all aspects of the project. Works were completed safely and on time, despite challenging conditions presented by weather conditions, with all planned inspections and investigation works being successfully completed.
