Precision Engineering at Usk Reservoir

Work is progressing well at Usk Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons National Park, where our team is installing twin 800 mm siphon pipes within the reservoir.

The project requires foundation blocks to be positioned with precision to receive the large-diameter flanged pipes. Accuracy at this stage is essential, as it sets the groundwork for the full installation and ensures long-term reliability. To support the process, our in-house fabrication team designed and assembled a bespoke jig to prepare the bed for the blocks. This practical engineering solution has already proven invaluable, ensuring each block is set correctly, while also helping to speed up progress on site without compromising on quality or safety.

Dan Jones, Diver at Edwards Diving Services, commented: “It’s been great to see the planning come together on site. The jig has made a real difference in helping us get the blocks set quickly and accurately. Next up, we’ll be replicating this process below the surface, so the preparation we’ve done here will really pay off.”

The next stage of the project will see our divers move into sub-surface works, carefully replicating the same process underwater to continue the installation. This is where our ability to combine civil engineering know-how with specialist diving expertise really pays off. Operating in difficult conditions, our teams are experienced in delivering complex infrastructure solutions in reservoirs, rivers, harbours and other inland water environments.

This project highlights the breadth of Edwards Diving Services’ capability — blending safe diving operations with fabrication, inspection, installation and engineering support to help clients achieve results in challenging, often inaccessible locations. It’s a great example of the practical problem-solving and teamwork that allow us to deliver projects successfully, on time, and to a high standard.
