Integrated Survey and Dive Operations Support Reservoir Investigation Works
Recent investigation works at a large reservoir brought together several Edwards Diving Services teams to deliver a coordinated, multi-disciplinary operation ahead of a major capital investment project.
The project required a range of specialist capabilities, demonstrating our turnkey approach by combining diving, survey, and safe access expertise within a single programme of work.
“Projects like this highlight the benefit of having multiple specialist teams working together,” said Paul Edwards, Managing Director of EDS. “By combining diving, survey and safe access capabilities, we’re able to provide clients with a complete service and a clear understanding of what’s happening below the surface.”
During the operation, one of the Dive Teams installed an over-pumping system – a temporary measure to provide the regulatory compensation flow so that the submerged valves could be closed and isolated to enable a safe diving operation to take place. Alongside this, the Survey Team deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and completed a detailed multibeam survey of the structure. One of the key challenges for the client was uncertainty around the precise location of the reservoir’s intake. Using multibeam sonar technology, the survey successfully identified and mapped the intake location, providing the information needed to support the next stage of engineering design.
At the same time, Edwards Diving Services’ Safe Access team provided support for confined space entry as part of the wider investigation works, ensuring all activities could be carried out safely and in line with industry standards.
“This type of early-stage investigation work is essential before major refurbishment projects begin,” Paul added. “The data gathered through surveys and inspection work allows detailed designs to be developed with confidence and helps ensure the next phase of works can be delivered safely and efficiently.”
This investigation marks an important step in a wider programme of investment at the reservoir, with further involvement anticipated as the project progresses.
