Workers carrying out inspection and maintenance works at Caerphilly Castle
Few sites carry the same sense of history as Caerphilly Castle – and for Edwards Diving Services, it’s a location with a story that goes back decades.
EDS recently returned to the historic Welsh fortress to support a Section 10 statutory inspection of the castle’s front moat reservoir on behalf of CADW, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. The inspection, carried out by the Reservoir Supervising Engineer, forms part of ongoing reservoir safety requirements and helps identify any repair or maintenance work needed to keep the structure operating safely.
The project brought together multiple EDS disciplines within a single package of works, allowing the client to benefit from a streamlined and highly capable team onsite. EDS’ Mechanical & Fabrication team, working alongside the company’s Confined Space Engineering and Safe Access & Rescue services, supported the inspection works within the castle’s drop shaft and tunnel system, before the M&F team also completed maintenance works on the site’s sluices and outfall chamber.
For Mechanical & Fabrication Manager Ralph Jones, the project demonstrated the value of combining specialist capabilities under one roof.
“Projects like this are where EDS really adds value,” said Ralph. “Rather than the client needing multiple contractors for different elements of the work, we’re able to bring together confined space capability, rescue support, fabrication expertise and inspection assistance in one coordinated team. That creates efficiencies onsite and helps keep projects moving safely and smoothly.”
The project also carried a personal connection for EDS Managing Director Paul Edwards.
Caerphilly Castle was the location of the very first diving job Paul undertook back in 1992, and EDS has continued supporting the site’s diving and marine civil engineering requirements ever since.
With inspection works now complete, EDS remains ready to support any future requirements that may arise.
