EDS Completes Reactive Coping Stone Recovery at ABP Cardiff Docks
When a dislodged coping stone created a potential hazard within the live operational environment at ABP Cardiff Docks, Edwards Diving Services responded quickly to help restore the area safely and minimise disruption to port activity.
The reactive project combined commercial diving expertise with marine civil engineering repairs within one of South Wales’ busiest dock environments.
Following a call from Associated British Ports (ABP), EDS mobilised within days to recover the displaced coping stone after it had fallen into the lock area. Working in a live dock environment, the EDS dive team safely recovered the structure before completing concrete repair works to the wall and reinstating the coping stone back into position.
By delivering both the underwater recovery and repair works as part of a single coordinated package, EDS was able to help ensure the shipping passage was cleared and normal operations could continue safely and efficiently.
For Diving Supervisor Morgan Power, the project demonstrated the importance of responsiveness and versatility when operating in busy commercial ports.
“This was a great example of the reactive support our teams provide,” Morgan explained. “The coping stone had become a hazard within an active dock environment, so there was a clear need to respond quickly and complete the works safely. By combining diving operations with marine civil engineering repairs, we were able to manage the full project with minimal disruption to port operations. I’m proud of the team and everyone involved.”
The project also reflects the continued development of EDS’ diving leadership team, with Morgan Power achieving his ADC Diving Supervisor qualification alongside Ed Smart earlier this year.
ABP owns and operates five ports across South and South East Wales, with Cardiff continuing to play a key role in supporting regional shipping and industry.
